The solution

Long dusty corridors inside the ceramic factory

We have developed a digital platform (MATIX Cloud) for the collection and in-cloud management of information deriving from molds at third parties, with the aim of optimizing their management. The molds were equipped with special sensors (MATIX Box) that allow the collection of data relating to the functioning of the mould and sending them to the digital platform.

The platform processes and aggregates the collected data, sharing the necessary information with the process stakeholders (purchasing, programming, press department, quality, maintenance, continuous improvement).

The creation of the solution took place in two phases:

PHASE I

We have developed an operational roadmap, setting as a strategic objective the full integration of the production planning of internal and external presses.

In particular, the roadmap included:

  • Verification of the procedures in place and the needs of the stakeholders, in order to outline a solution that would satisfy all the needs
  • Designing the most suitable solution to achieve the objectives, through the use of dynamic mockups
  • Fine-tuning of the mockup and subsequent implementation of the pilot digital platform.

PHASE II

Through the rapid prototyping methodology based on Lean Startup Approach, we validated the most suitable technical solution to collect operating data directly from the molds.

In particular, together with De’Longhi we have identified four fundamental KPIs to monitor:

  • Hours worked
  • Pieces produced
  • Mold maintenance
  • Waste products.
MATIX

The results

Thanks to the adoption of MATIX, De’Longhi is now able to monitor its mold park with an error rate of less than 3% and a localization precision of less than 100m.

You can therefore know, even remotely:

  • the mould identification data
  • if it is on/off and if it is working
  • his position
  • the number of beats remaining until scheduled maintenance
  • total jokes
  • total hours worked

In this way, it is possible to know if the mold is working correctly, what its actual productivity is (to optimize production and, consequently, costs), calculate the life expectancy of the mold, ensure that regular maintenance is carried out by receiving an alert if this is not the case, and reduce the production of waste and non-conformities.

Technologies

MATIX EAM

MATIX EAM is a cloud-based digital platform for managing machinery, molds, and manufacturing equipment that simplifies asset lifecycle management by digitizing maintenance processes and automating efficiency analysis. This platform enables centralized and transparent asset management, facilitating access to information and improving collaboration among the various people responsible for plant operation.

MATIX EAM can complement MATIX Box: a compact IoT sensor designed to be installed on assets independently. This device collects data on utilization and production efficiency, transmitting this information to the cloud where it is aggregated and displayed in the form of graphs and dashboards. MATIX Box uses a high-precision accelerometer to measure impacts and movements, ensuring reliable and accurate data collection.
